Release the Pressure, Celebrate Your Strength
You wouldn’t criticize a sculpture for not being finished after the first chisel strike, so why criticize yourself?
Just like a work of art that becomes more refined and remarkable with each careful revision, we must recognize our own deepening strength.
But somewhere along the way, we’ve forgotten that women over 50 aren’t fading—we’re being sculpted into our most powerful form.
I’m not sure if it’s the youth-obsessed fitness industry, the misleading narratives about aging, or the voices telling us our strongest years are behind us.
Maybe it’s all of them.
Reconnecting With the Truth
Regardless of the reason, our society has disconnected women from the truth about their bodies’ remarkable capacity for strength, growth, and transformation at any age.
And as a side effect, many women believe it’s too late to begin.
But that isn’t how our bodies work.
Our bodies are capable of incredible transformation.
There are seasons when we’re laying the foundation.
There are seasons when we’re refining our technique.
There are seasons when we’re revealing our masterpiece.
Just like an artist who returns to their work day after day, our strength also develops through patient, devoted practice.
The Art of Building Strength
And I believe if we approached strength training through this lens, it would transform how we see ourselves.
We would feel less anxious about where we think we “should” be, and we would find more confidence in honoring where we are right now.
Just for a moment, think of your strength goals—whether that’s lifting heavier weights, moving without pain, or simply feeling capable in your body—as a canvas you’re creating.
That vision doesn’t become your reality the moment you step into the gym, just like a painting doesn’t come to life with a single brushstroke.
Art requires layered effort to develop, and it needs the right touch.
As it relates to our strength journey, we need to approach our goals with patience, consistency, and self-compassion.
We also need to trust the process the way an artist trusts that each session in the studio, even the frustrating ones, contributes to the final work.
Trusting the Process
When this becomes our approach, we give our bodies the care and time they need to adapt.
We spend less energy being frustrated with our progress and more energy honoring each workout, each rest day, each small victory along the way.
And I think that’s the most sustainable path to lasting strength.
So, as you reflect on your fitness journey and think about all the milestones you wish you’d already reached, I invite you to welcome this new perspective.
When this becomes your foundation, you release the unnecessary pressure that’s making your journey harder than it needs to be.
No one else is creating those expectations.
And you’re in full control to shift them with a simple change in mindset.
A Masterpiece in Progress
As you move forward and your mind starts to doubt because you feel like you’re starting too late, or that your progress is too slow, or that you should be further along, remember this:
You’re a masterpiece in progress, and every layer of work matters.
